VISAS

A visa is permission for a foreigner to enter a country issued by the country granting such permission. A Visa may allow the foreigner to go for sightseeing, meet businessmen, participate in trade exhibitions, work, marry a local citizen in the country where he has received such a visa. Needless to say, not all Visas are alike and not all Visas allow the foreigner to do everything. Different types of visas govern what a visa holder is allowed to do in the foreign country and also how long he would be allowed to stay in that country.

WORK VISAS

Like almost every country in the world, a foreigner cannot work in the US without a specific authorization. Such work authorization may be temporary in nature such as the H-1B visa or the Intra-company transferee visa (L-1) and other types of temporary work visas. From time to time, the US also places certain countries under a “temporary protected status” enabling citizens of those countries present in the US are given certain protections, such as preventing their deportation and also gives them the right to work in the US.

CITIZENSHIP

United States, one of the most liberalized western democracies,permits a foreigner, subject to certain conditions, to acquire US Citizenship. A foreigner acquiring US Citizenship is called a naturalized Citizen. Generally a continuous stay of five years ( with some exceptions) after a person has become a permanent resident gives entitlement to apply for citizenship. There is no requirement for every person who has completed 5 years of permanent residence to acquire US citizenship.
